DRAGON BOAT FESTIVAL IN THE NEWS
Friday is the registration deadline for the 2008 Lake Superior Dragon Boat Festival. So far, over 80 teams have registered for this year’s event — with openings still available.

Each team is comprised of a maximum of 25 members, which includes 1 Team Manager, 1 Drummer, 1 Steersperson, 20 paddlers and 2 alternates. As in other dragon boat competitions, each team must compete with a minimum of 8 women per-boat, per-race.

A wide variety of dragon boat teams are assembled every year — including businesses who put together teams as a team-building event and friendly competition with other local businesses, friends who put together teams for a fun weekend together, cancer survivors with the common bond of conquering their battle with cancer, Rotary organizations locally and from around the region, and many other teams.

Details about how to register your team for the festival can be found at www.lakesuperiordragons.com.

The Lake Superior Dragon Boat Festival is presented by Jamar and is the largest festival of its kind in the U.S. It is an annual fundraising event organized by the Superior Rotary Club, Harbortown Rotary Club of Duluth and Superior Sunrise.

The 2008 race will be held August 22-23 in the Superior Bay off Barker’s Island in Superior — and includes a traditional Dragon Boat race as well as music, food and beverage vendors and other entertainment.

Last year the festival raised over $100,000 for local charities and non-profit partner SMDC Breast Program. To date the festival has raised over $600,000 all of which has been donated back into the Duluth-Superior communities.
