DULUTH NATIVE HEADED HOME, ON A TALL-SHIP
Anne LewisFor native Duluthian Anne Lewis, the journey of the Pride of Baltimore II across Lake Superior will be more than a rare visit by a tall-masted ship into her original home port.

Lewis, who now lives in Baltimore, will be one of the amateur “crew” members on board and, as the ship crosses the lake, will do a series of dispatches for Lake Superior Magazine found on www.lakesuperior.com.

Her first dispatch anticipating the journey will be posted Thursday, July 24. If the wireless connections are cooperative, Lewis will then send dispatches from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, from somewhere near the Keweenaw Peninsula, Michigan, and finally after the ship arrives in Duluth on July 31.

Pride of BaltimoreThe Pride of Baltimore II is coming to Duluth with two other tall ships, the Madeline and the U.S. Brig Niagara, for the Duluth Maritime Festival August 1-3. The event will include tours of the ships, which are expected to sail into the Duluth harbor July 31.

“It is a little unusual for a bimonthly magazine to cover ‘breaking’ news,” said Lake Superior Magazine Editor Konnie LeMay, “but the excitement of once again seeing tall ships in Duluth merits some special reporting.”

For the past year, updates on stories covered by the magazine or stories just for the website have appeared at www.lakesuperior.com.

Lewis grew up in a home on London Road in Duluth and still has a home in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, although she and her husband live in Baltimore. Part of her enthusiasm for the adventure of crossing the lake is this once-in-a-lifetime experience aboard the ship and the chance to follow part way the reverse journey of “Paddle to the Sea,” the little carved canoe toy featured in the book by that name.

“We were introduced to Lake Superior lore through Holling Clancy Holling’s book, Paddle to the Sea, and Longfellow’s ‘Song of Hiawatha,’ along with family stories of Minnesota North Shore’s early history and our own history that was intertwined with the development of the region,” Lewis said.

Lake Superior Magazine, a full-color consumer publication, is printed six times a year in Duluth. The magazine is available by subscription, at newsstands and from the publisher’s office. For more information, call 888-BIG LAKE (888.244.5253) or log onto www.lakesuperior.com.
